Holding Onto the Last Light

There are some evenings that seem to ask you to slow down.

The sun slips behind the trees, the lake becomes perfectly still, and suddenly the sky is doing all the talking. Warm golds melt into soft pinks and cool blues, while every colour finds its way into the water below.

This painting began with one of those moments. What caught my attention wasn't just the sunset itself, but the conversation between light and reflection. The lake wasn't simply reflecting the sky. It was becoming part of it.

When I paint scenes like this, I'm not trying to recreate every cloud or every ripple. I'm chasing the feeling of being there. That quiet pause at the end of the day when everything seems to settle, and for a few minutes, nothing feels rushed.

It's those moments that stay with us long after the sun has disappeared. They're reminders to look up, slow down, and appreciate the beauty that's often over in a matter of minutes.

That's the feeling I hoped to capture on canvas. Not just a summer sunset, but the peace that comes with watching the day gently come to a close.
