Neon Buzz

Neon Buzz, 18 x 24 in, oil on canvas

A new painting of a favourite place—Massey Hall. My aim was to capture the palpable feeling of charged up anticipation in the crowd...the mummers, laughs, and shuffling feet as they eagerly enter this incredible building to be thoroughly entertained for a few hours. With the strange neon colours reflecting off every surface, it was a fun challenge.

For most people, when the music is loud, everything is vibrating, and you are part of a crowd that is singing and dancing along, it's a period of total well being and absorption. "Music is the medicine of the mind." said John A. Logan, a 19th century political figure and it's easy to feel it's benefits. Listening to music that you love decreases the release of stress hormones and causes your brain to release endorphins that block pain, a reason why some patients listen to music before, during, and after surgery. Attending a show with thousands of concert-goers also gives a sense of connection with other people—a feeling of community and shared interest that benefits longevity and life happiness.

Massey Hall was completed in1894 and is a national historic site of Canada. So many famous people have performed in this outstanding hall. Charlie Parker-Dizzy Gillespie performed their famous concert here in 1953 (Jazz at Massey Hall), Neil Young performed and recorded the great Live at Massey Hall 1971, and the album All the World's a Stage by Rush was also recorded here in 1976. Just a very few of the incredible performances that have taken place in this landmark building.

Whether it's a comedy show, music concert or another event, Massey Hall is the pinnacle venue for entertainment combining history, community, and complete enjoyment. Neon Buzz is the second painting I've done of Massey Hall but surely not to be the last!
