The Story Behind the Painting

Almost Heaven was inspired by an early morning kayak to watch the sun come up. The lake was calm, with just enough movement in the water to catch the reflections. As the sun rose, its warm light began to reach across the shoreline, illuminating the trees facing the morning light and shining off the rocks along the water’s edge. Above it all, soft morning clouds drifted lazily across the sky.

It’s the kind of moment that lingers long after you’ve paddled back to shore. I wanted to capture that feeling in this painting. Not just the beauty of the landscape, but the sense of quiet and possibility that comes with watching a new day begin. There is something hopeful about sunrise. No matter what has come before, there is always a new morning.

In this painting, I was drawn to the way the early light transformed an otherwise familiar landscape. The trees, rocks and water became part of a constantly changing pattern of light and reflection. It is those fleeting moments in the Canadian landscape that continue to inspire my work.

I hope this painting brings some of that feeling into the space where it lives. A quiet reminder to pause, look around, and appreciate the beauty that can be found in an ordinary morning.
