The Story Behind the Painting

There is a special kind of stillness that exists in the moments before sunrise. The lake is calm, the air is cool, and a soft veil of mist drifts across the water as the first hints of daylight begin to colour the sky. Everything feels peaceful, full of quiet anticipation.
 

This painting features one of my favourite islands to paint. I’ve returned to it many times over the years because every sunrise tells a different story. On this morning, the sky glowed with warm colour just before the sun emerged above the treetops. The reflections shimmered across the glass-like water while the mist softened the landscape, creating a scene that felt both timeless and full of possibility.
 

For me, sunrise has always symbolized hope and fresh beginnings. Each new day offers another chance to explore, create, and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us. I wanted this painting to capture not only the beauty of an Ontario lake at dawn but also the quiet optimism that comes with the start of a new day.
