I love walking through the woods without having anywhere particular to go. There is something about following a trail (or making your own), noticing how the light shines through the trees, and wondering what you will find around the next bend.

I think that is one of the reasons I am drawn to painting forests and trails. They offer more than beautiful scenery. They create a feeling of possibility.

The simple pleasure of exploring

Many of my paintings begin with experiences like these. I spend a lot of time exploring the woods, often without a particular destination in mind. I might follow a trail simply because it looks interesting, or stop because the light has suddenly changed.

Those moments of light are especially important to me. A shaft of sunlight filtering through the canopy can completely transform a familiar stretch of forest. It might illuminate a patch of trail, catch the leaves, or draw your eye deeper into the woods.

That was the starting point for Beneath the Canopy.

The painting isn't really about a particular place. It is about the feeling of being there, surrounded by trees and quiet, with the trail continuing ahead.

What lies around the next bend?

There is something comforting about a path disappearing into the distance. We can't see where it leads, but we know we can keep going.

Life is a little like that.

We often want to know what is coming next. We make plans, try to anticipate what might happen, and sometimes spend so much time thinking about the destination that we forget to notice where we are.

Walking in the woods reminds me to do the opposite.

Pay attention to the light. Notice the trees. Listen to the sounds around you. Wonder what is around the next bend, but don't be in too much of a hurry to get there.

Perhaps we aren't meant to know exactly what is ahead.

Bringing that feeling home

This is one of the reasons I believe original Canadian landscape art can have such a meaningful place in our homes. A landscape painting doesn't have to simply remind us of a particular view or location. It can remind us of how we felt in a place.

For me, Beneath the Canopy is a reminder to stay curious and enjoy the journey.

The path leads somewhere, but the destination isn't the point. The light, the quiet, and the simple act of moving forward are enough.

And perhaps that is what I hope a painting like this can offer someone who lives with it. A small reminder, whenever they look at it, to slow down, stay curious, and appreciate what is right in front of them.

Beneath the Canopy is an original Canadian landscape painting inspired by the forests and trails I love to explore. You can view the painting and learn more about my original landscape work here on my website.
