Refuge: A Large Original Canadian Landscape Painting
There are moments in the Canadian landscape when the light seems to do all the work. The sun finds its way through the trees, the water catches the last of the day's warmth, and everything feels a little quieter.
That was what drew me to Refuge.

I was interested in the contrast between the tall pines and the movement of the water. The trees provide a strong structure, while the reflections create a softer, more fluid path through the painting. I enjoyed working with the cooler blues and greys against the warmth of the light, allowing the colours to shift and come together without losing the feeling of the place.
As the painting developed, the title Refuge began to feel right. Time spent by the water has always offered me a chance to slow down and step away from the busyness of everyday life. There is a comfort in these familiar landscapes, particularly when the light shines through the trees.
At 60 x 40 inches, Refuge is one of those paintings that has a real presence in a room. I like the idea of bringing a little of that quiet, that connection to the outdoors, into someone's home.
