As an artist who has spent years painting Ontario's lakes, forests, and quiet shorelines, I've often wondered why these scenes continue to resonate with collectors. The answer has very little to do with scenery alone.

People sometimes assume collectors purchase landscape paintings because they remind them of a favourite cottage or vacation.
Sometimes that's true.
More often, however, they are collecting something less tangible.
They are collecting a feeling.
Think about standing beside a quiet lake as evening approaches. The breeze has settled. The water becomes almost perfectly still. The last light of the day touches the trees along the shoreline, turning ordinary greens into warm golds and soft amber. For a few brief minutes, the world feels wonderfully unhurried.
Those moments stay with us.
Long after we've left the lake, we remember how we felt there.
That is what an original landscape painting can bring into a home.
Why Original Art Feels Different
We live in a world filled with beautiful images.
Thousands pass across our phones every week. We admire them for a few seconds before moving on to the next one.
An original painting asks something different of us.
It invites us to slow down.
The texture of the brushwork, the subtle changes in colour, and the way light moves across the painted surface reveal themselves gradually. Months later, you may notice something you had never seen before.
That experience simply cannot be reproduced by a screen or a mass-produced print.

The landscapes I paint are rarely chosen because they are famous.
I'm drawn instead to places that invite us to pause.
A calm shoreline.
The reflection of evening light across still water.
The silence that settles over an Ontario lake just before sunset.
These are the moments that remind me why I became a landscape painter.
My newest painting, Summer Evening, grew from one of those experiences.
As the sun lowered over an Ontario lake, the shoreline seemed to come alive. The trees reflected the warm colours of the sky, while the water became a mirror, holding those colours for just a little longer before night arrived.
What I wanted to capture wasn't simply the view.
It was the feeling that everything had slowed down.
The kind of moment we wish we could hold onto.
Choosing Art That Will Last
When someone considers purchasing an original painting, they are rarely asking only, "Do I like this?"
A more important question is often quietly forming.
"Will I still love living with this ten years from now?"
The best original paintings continue to reveal themselves over time. They become familiar companions, reflecting not only the landscape they portray but also the memories and emotions we bring to them.
