Reflecting by Sue Miller, a square oil painting of an orange sunset reflected on rippled lake water, with blue clouds above and evergreens along the rocky shore at right.
Reflecting, 36 x 36 inches, Oil/canvas.

On this day, there was such a sense of peace watching the sun set. So much colour in the sky, but my eye kept coming back to the water, where each little ripple picked up a bit of gold.

One of the things I love about being in nature is how easily it helps me take a step back from everyday life. Spend a little time by the water and the things that have been keeping me busy seem a little less pressing. There’s room to think about what really matters.

That’s where the title Reflecting came from. The sky was reflected in the lake, and I was doing a little reflecting of my own.

Whether it’s a walk or a paddle, spending time outside gives us a chance to move and pay attention to what’s around us. And sometimes, just sitting by the water is enough. On this evening, watching the light change was all I needed to be doing.

I think a landscape painting can bring some of that feeling into our homes, too. It might remind us of evenings at the cottage, a favourite stretch of shoreline or simply how good it feels to be by the water. That’s something I hope for when I paint these places. I’d love for someone to look up from a busy day, see the painting and feel a little of the peace I felt being there.

For all the colour in Reflecting, that peaceful feeling is what I remember most, and what I wanted to bring into the painting.
