Some moments on the lake are impossible to plan.

You can spend the day under bright blue skies, expecting nothing more than a peaceful evening, and then suddenly the light begins to change. The sun drops toward the horizon, the rocks glow with warm gold, and every pine seems to catch the last rays before night quietly settles in. The water becomes a mirror, reflecting not just the landscape, but the feeling of the moment itself.

That was the inspiration behind Whisper of Pine.

This 18 × 18-inch original oil painting captures a familiar scene along the Canadian Shield. The rugged shoreline, windswept pines, and calm water are all unmistakably Canadian, but what drew me to paint this scene wasn't simply the landscape. It was the light.

Golden hour has a way of revealing details that often go unnoticed. The granite takes on warm amber tones. The evergreens are edged with sunlight. Even the shadows seem softer. It's a fleeting transformation that lasts only a few minutes before the colours fade into twilight.

As I painted, I wanted to preserve that sense of quiet anticipation. The gentle ripples across the water, the luminous reflections, and the soft lavender clouds overhead all work together to create a feeling of calm rather than dramatic spectacle. It's an invitation to pause for a moment and simply look.

One of the things I love most about painting Canadian landscapes is how personal they become for the viewer. Some people see a favourite cottage lake. Others remember an evening paddle, a fishing trip with family, or sitting on a dock watching the sun disappear behind the trees. While every painting begins with my experience, it becomes something different once it finds a new home.

Oil paint is especially suited to capturing these changing conditions. Building layers of transparent and opaque colour allows the warm light to glow through cooler passages, creating depth that changes as the painting is viewed throughout the day. I enjoy leaving expressive brushwork visible because it reminds us that this is not simply a scene, but a hand-painted interpretation of a place and a moment.
