Awakening: Painting the Quiet Promise of an Ontario Sunrise

Some of my favourite moments on the lake happen before most people are awake.

Long before the sun appears above the trees, the landscape begins to change. The darkness softens, the sky slowly fills with warm colour, and a light mist drifts across the water. The lake is perfectly still, creating reflections that almost blur the line between water and sky. It’s a peaceful time of day that never lasts long, but it’s one I find myself returning to again and again.

That quiet moment inspired my newest oil painting, Awakening.

Original oil painting of a favourite island at sunrise on an Ontario lake, with glowing skies, drifting morning mist, calm water reflections, and evergreen trees in the Canadian Shield.
Awakening, 36 x 48 inches, oil/canvas

The island featured in this painting has become one of my favourite subjects over the years. I’ve painted it in different seasons, under changing skies, and in every kind of light. Each visit offers something unique. On this particular morning, it wasn’t the dramatic sunrise that caught my attention. Instead, it was the gentle glow spreading across the horizon just before the sun cleared the treetops. Combined with the drifting mist and calm reflections, the entire scene felt full of quiet anticipation.

As a Canadian landscape artist, I’m continually inspired by the lakes and forests of Ontario’s Canadian Shield. These rugged landscapes have a timeless quality that reminds us to slow down and appreciate the beauty around us. Whether it’s the weathered rock, the towering pines, or the changing colours reflected on the water, every outing offers another story waiting to be painted.

For me, sunrise has always represented possibility. Every new day begins with hope, fresh opportunities, and the chance to discover something beautiful. I wanted Awakening to capture that feeling, inviting viewers to pause for a moment and experience the calm that nature so often provides.

I hope its story continues to inspire others who share a love of Ontario’s lakes, peaceful mornings, and the Canadian wilderness. Many of my paintings begin with experiences just like this one, and those moments continue to shape the work I create.

Thank you for following my artistic journey. Whether you’re a collector, a fellow nature lover, or simply someone who enjoys the beauty of Canada’s landscapes, I hope this painting reminds you of a sunrise that has stayed with you.

If you’d like to see more of my original Ontario landscape paintings, I’d love to welcome you to explore the rest of my collection.
